RAINER LOWRY’S SUGAR CAMP VISIT On Monday, we decided to go check out Rainer Lowry's sugar camp. We drove down the dirt road to the camp to find steam rising and a sweet smell in the air. Upon entering the camp we found Rainer hard at work tending to his sugar rig. He also had a helper by the name of Allan Lloyd tending to the fires. The arch was crackling and the sap was boiling to make some of the best pure Quebec maple syrup in the area. This sugar camp all came to be in 1980 as Rainer equipped it with all he needed to sugar. It has been used almost every year since. This year is no different. The steam is rising from sap picked up from over 5000 taps. He also has another sugar bush tapped with that coming in by tanker. The tanker hauls it to Rainer and he boils it down. The smell in the air makes your mouth water. He looked at us, grinning, and said “I’ll tell ya after I get done.” It was a fun way to spend a rainy af ternoon. We woke up Tuesday morning to snow, so Rainer will certainly be gathering sap again soon. –Corey Bellam JEFFERSON BRIDGE REHABILITATION The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) announces work is scheduled to begin on or about April 15, 2016 on the rehabilitation of the US Route 2 bridge over the Israel River in Jefferson.
