Doping in Sport : The Role of the Coach

Dr Lisa Whitaker , UK Coaching , spoke to Dr Laurie Patterson , Leeds Beckett University , about all things doping , including the role coaches have to play in promoting clean sport and the latest anti-doping rules .
First of all , what is doping ? When people think of doping , I think the first thing that comes to mind is usually using banned substances . But this idea only covers two of the official anti-doping rule violations ( ADRVs ) (‘ use ’ of banned substances / methods and ‘ presence ’ of banned substances / methods ).
Doping is actually defined as engaging in behaviour that constitutes one of eleven ADRVs . In addition to the two that I already mentioned , the other violations relate to :
• drugs testing ( like tampering with the process , evading a test , and athletes failing to let the authorities know their ‘ whereabouts ’)
• having and moving substances ( possession , trafficking and administration )
• interactions between you and others ( complicity , associating with someone who has received a doping sanction and retaliation against a whistleblower ).
