© ALPA PROD / shutterstock . com it requires mental dexterity . Trying to keep a feel for the purpose and direction of the conversation , whilst actively listening and applying some of the other key motivational interviewing techniques that the authors highlight has at times been tricky , but the value in persisting at this is significant .
The chapter draws attention to the culture that surrounds sport and the expectation of a coach to fix ; from parents , other coaches , fans and players , but the reality is that by overusing the ‘ righting reflex ’ coaches can miss the opportunity to understand more about the person they are supporting , meeting them where they are at , before sharing their own view of how to remedy a problem .
There is a focus on the contrast in approach from coaches , some wanting to fix ( instructing and correcting mistakes ), and other coaches keen to follow ( listening and observing ). The authors make the case for a third approach , that of guiding . The guiding style is highlighted as the foundation of Motivational Interviewing , “ because the energy , bright ideas and motivation for change come from the player ”. It is captured in the book with an acute statement : “ I guide , you decide ”. This approach highlights how the relationship between coach and athlete is central , with both participants having an active role to play , and a perspective role to offer .
The mindset chapter of the book concludes with a simple but tangible reflective question :
“ How does guiding fit in to how you routinely work ?”.
Summary The language in this book does not just support the coach-athlete relationship but precedes the culture in coaching teams ; how we speak to each other about coaching and supporting athletes . The strategies outlined within the text puts the athlete at the centre of the decision-making process , where the coach acts as a skilful guide , listening , offering and affirming the actions of the person in front of them .
The book , which provides a deep dive into motivational interviewing , a toolbox of techniques , scenarios and set plays for coaches , is a tangible resource which can offer an additional way to support athletes to fulfil their potential .
