FEATURE FASHION FOR GOOD With ethics and slowness in fashion calling out with urgency today, Anurima Das writes of the recent developments in the realm of sustainable apparel. It is an established fact that fashion leaves a long trail of impacts on the environment. The United States (US) alone produces more than 16 million tonnes of textile waste every year, and this amount has drastically doubled within the last 20 years, as per the data collected by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This waste, generated by the fashion industry at large, ends up in landfills in huge amounts, and has been a matter of growing concern the world over. As a result of this, brands, designers, and individuals are now motivated to embrace newer techniques and methods through which they can subjugate this issue and adopt practices that pose the least harm to the entire ecosystem. 40 I APPAREL I September 2019 20 19
