TRADE STATISTICS Canada Apparel Imports January to March 2018 Canada rises massively in apparel imports value during Q1 ’18 Canada witnessed a massive rise (25.52%) in its apparel import in the first quarter of 2018. Not just apparels, Canada felt the shivers of higher than usual import levels in other categories too which further resulted into widened trade deficit. During the period, the deficit was more than double what analysts had forecast earlier. However, with CPTPP and CETA, Canada is predicting a better year ahead as far as trade with partner countries is concerned that might reduce the gap of deficit in the further months. Canada Imports India Exports 25.52 % 23.56 % The knitted apparel reported 25.72% surge during the review period, whereas the woven segment saw rise of 25.34% in value terms. During the review period, the value of Indian knitted apparel exports increased by 31.20%. On the other hand, export value of woven segment rose 18.35% on Y-o-Y basis. Sri Lanka Exports 14.20 % During the period, the country noted 11.94% surge in its knitted garment exports to Canada, whereas woven segment exports upped by 17.19%. Vietnam Exports 29.52 % Knitted garment exports from Vietnam to Canada saw rise by notable 32.23% while export of woven garments was up by 26.90%. B’Desh Exports Pakistan Exports China Exports Indonesia Exports 16.79 % 37.85 % 23.52 % 18.19 % Bangladesh escalated in both knitted and woven garment exports to Canada by 16.47% and 17% respectively, during the review period. In woven category, the Pakistan’s export values were up by 9.33%. On the other hand, knitted segment exports to Canada registered notable growth of 72.34% on Y-o-Y basis. In the knitted garment exports, China marked 22.38% growth, while the woven garments noted boost by 24.55% during the period under review. In the knitted garment exports, Indonesia surged by 22.87%, while woven garments increased by 14.29% on the yearly note. Turkey’s apparel export to EU climbs 6.48% to € 904 million Turkey has started the year 2018 on a positive note in terms of its apparel exports to the 28-nations bloc – European Union. The country in Eurasia noted a surge of 9.40 per cent in volumes, whereas values got a boost of 6.48 per cent in January. The country’s volume-wise export to the EU stood at 37.85 million kg as against 34.60 million kg of apparels in the corresponding month last year. However, Turkey, which is said to be a close competitor of Bangladesh as far as apparel exports to the EU is concerned, stood far behind from the latter’s exports performance. Bangladesh exported apparel to the Union worth € 1.46 billion in the reporting month, whereas Turkey earned € 904 million in the same month stamping on the fact that Turkey has a long way to go to surpass Bangladesh in the European market. Further, unit prices of the apparels shipped by Turkey dropped significantly which is not a surprise seeing the plunge in the global apparel industry.
