TRADE STATISTICS
Canada Apparel Imports
January to March 2018
Canada rises massively in apparel imports value during Q1 ’18
Canada witnessed a massive rise (25.52%) in its apparel import in the first quarter of 2018. Not just apparels,
Canada felt the shivers of higher than usual import levels in other categories too which further resulted into
widened trade deficit. During the period, the deficit was more than double what analysts had forecast earlier.
However, with CPTPP and CETA, Canada is predicting a better year ahead as far as trade with partner countries
is concerned that might reduce the gap of deficit in the further months.

January.
The country’s volume-wise export to the EU stood at 37.85 million kg as against 34.60 million kg of apparels in the
corresponding month last year.
However, Turkey, which is said to be a close competitor of Bangladesh as far as apparel exports to the EU is concerned,
stood far behind from the latter’s exports performance.
Bangladesh exported apparel to the Union worth € 1.46 billion in the reporting month, whereas Turkey earned € 904
million in the same month stamping on the fact that Turkey has a long way to go to surpass Bangladesh in the European
market.
Further, unit prices of the apparels shipped by Turkey dropped significantly which is not a surprise seeing the plunge in
the global apparel industry. UVR (Unit Value Realisation) during January 2018 was € 23.88 per kg of garments whereas
the same was € 24.54 in January 2017.
