IS APPAREL EXPORT ANY BETTER OFF
THAN 2017? ‘Do or Die’… The New Mantra for Growth in
Garment Industry
After a very challenging year in 2017, the industry was looking
forward to a fresh start in 2018 and at the beginning of the year,
most of the companies that Apparel Online interacted with were
hopeful that the business would improve this year and even the
policy issues which had created such havoc to the business, mostly
in terms of liquidity would be resolved. The dichotomy of views in garment exports is a study on how
different companies working in the same industry can perceive
the same situation as positive and negative! While some
companies are talking of all the reasons that will spell doom
for the industry, there are others who have not only come to
terms with the situation, but are actually moving ahead with
investments and expansion plans. It is obvious that the industry
has evened out...
Deepak Seth, Group Chairman, Pearl Global
“Our industry has a huge opportunity to grow in
these tough times, especially since China is slowly
exiting the apparel space.”
HKL Magu, Chairman, AEPC
“Out of approximately Rs. 4,000 crore of GST refund
that belonged to apparel exporters, about Rs. 2,000
crore has been released so far.”
Vijay Agarwal, Chairman, Creative Group
“There are no major global issues; global economy is
doing much better except that globally all buyers are
looking for competitive prices, but India has a serious
disadvantage.”
Sanjay Jain, Chairman,
Confederation
of Indian Textile
Industries (CITI)
“The worst is over for
the Textile & Clothing
Industry and it is finally
on the verge of a
turnaround.”
Pranab Mahajan,
Director, Mahajan
Overseas, Panipat Animesh Saxena,
MD, Neetee Clothing,
Gurgaon
“There is no point of
talking about change
unless we set it rolling;
just waiting for change
to happen, is a strategy
that losers use.” “We are confined
to Spring/Summer
garments when 65 per
cent of the world is
focused on Fall/Winter.”
Suresh Kumar, VP –
Marketing, Goodwill
Fabrics, Bangalore Abhay, GM, Washing,
Texport Syndicate,
Bangalore
“Garments have more
growth opportunities
compared to fabric as
fabric business seems to
be saturated.” “In current scenario,
to survive in business
it is all about volume
orders; it is not the time
or question of making
profit.”
Jaspal Dehal, CEO, Majestic Global
“Despite rupee depreciating against the greenback by
almost 7.5 per cent in recent months to trade around
Rs. 68 per US dollar, India’s apparel and textile exports
have not been benefited from the trend.”
Rajiv Kapoor, MD, Affordable Exports
“Some of the exporters might be receiving GST
refund but none of the exporters in my circle have so
far received any communication in this regard.”
Uday Sehgal, Director, Mariko Plus
“There is business, but only for survival as margins
are not there and we can just run our machines but
can’t generate the profits which can push us for
further business.”
Nimish Shah of Amber
Home, Mumbai
“Our new unit in Solapur
(Maharashtra) will have
an initial capacity of
3,000 pieces daily and
Polo tees will be our
core product.”
