HUB UPDATE CHANGING DYNAMICS OF LUDHIANA’S APPAREL INDUSTRY • Newness in product categories • Expansion and diversification • Extensive market reach H aving the strength of raw material to final products, push for continuous automation and zeal to fight with the established as well as emerging challenges, Ludhiana – North India’s biggest hub for knitted garments, is continuously moving ahead. Covering most of the segments in textile value chain, Ludhiana’s garment industry is full of new developments. Garment manufacturers are very proactive – investing into new technologies, expanding, adding new products, going into new markets, adopting tools like lean… Team Apparel Online was recently in Ludhiana and met many apparel manufacturers to understand the undercurrent of the industry. It was heartening to find that a majority of the industry is on the right track, though the pace of growth needs to be speeded up. Now the next stage of development is to move towards those products which have neither been the strength of the city, nor the focus of any company, so far. Not only established and top players, but even the middle-level companies are also going for new products. Existing strong client-base, availability of funds, in-house fabric support and technical know-how are some of the reasons that have given confidence to the companies to add new products. To mention a few, Superfine Knitters, one of the biggest names in Ludhiana, is setting up a lingerie and jacket facility and has purchased Yamato machines for the same. K Christopher, AC (Retd.) is of the opinion that the Government now needs to do its bit. Canvas Clothing is also planning for solar panel. Currently, it has power load connection of 250 KW and is targeting to get 100 KW through solar. It may take a year and the project cost is near Rs. 70-80 lakh. of the new unit will be nearly 5,000 pieces (in lingerie) and 3,300 (in jackets) pieces per day. Currently, the company is mainly into tees and kidswear. Vivek Lakra, Director of the company shared reasons for initiating new products: “Besides helping us to diversify our products’ range, lingerie demand is increasing worldwide and also in India. So, we are adding the same in our offerings.” Currently the capacity of the company is nearly 5 lakh pieces per month. Simultaneously, PS Group of Companies is going to start undergarments’ manufacturing and has installed 90 stitching machines for the same initially. As of now, it has a knitting capacity of nearly 20 tonnes per month and is also manufacturing bottomwear for domestic market using its own 100 stitching machines.
