Shima Seiki readies Bangladesh for
tech-transition with its automatic
cutting solution P-CAM
A
dynamic market for apparel production,
Bangladesh undoubtedly has been
enjoying the status of being on the priority
list among the buyers, majorly owing to its
cheaper and bulk production. With fast-paced
growth that has made the country reach
at this position today, it is facing barriers
posing as a distinct threat to its unchallenged
popularity among the apparel manufacturing
hubs. Poor infrastructure, port congestion,
limited gas supply, political turmoil are few
of the menaces which have been creating
regular impediments for apparel exporters,
but these are usually mitigated by the cut
down on the profit margins. Recently, the
country’s apparel sector witnessed the lowest
growth (0.20 per cent) in the last one-and-a
half decade. Moreover, a surging demand
for a minimum wage of BDT 16,000 from
the current BDT of 5,300 will add on to the
existing pressure of the apparel exporters.
Japan-based Shima Seiki, a leading
manufacturer of computerised flatbed and
WHOLEGARMENT knitting machines, calls for
digitalization and automation as the antidotes
to these problems. “Every process in apparel
manufacturing from design to shipping
is isolated. They are not connected and
rationalized, thus employing more resources
to do a task,” shares Tadanori Ueno, General
Manager – Bangladesh Liaison Office,
Shima Seiki.
The only option, therefore, that the country
has is to mature faster to keep up with the
advancements and to help them in taking this
significant leap, Shima Seiki is available with its
array of offerings for the Bangladesh market.
The company made its debut of automatic
cutting solution P-CAM in the market at the
recently held DTG exhibition. “Sensing the
growth of categories like jeans and shirts,
we have now tapped the cutting room also,”

informs Ueno. With new factories coming up
in these categories and automatic cutting
machines becoming the buyers’ requirement,
Shima Seiki’s automatic cutting solution
promises undeterred quality, productivity and
reliability to the manufacturers.
Available in cutting thickness options of
33 mm, 55 mm and 75 mm, 80 mm, P-CAM
is suitable for the high-volume and multi-
ply cutting of fabrics. Equipped with a
reciprocating knife, the cutting speed
allowed is 60-70 m/minute. Low-noise
and low-vibration cutting head further
enables smoother and faster movement,
thus increasing productivity. A new knife
sharpening system with automative knife
width measurement system, that is, automatic
grinding of whetstone, maintains the
sharpness of blades and takes minimum time,
thus leading to reduced downtime. Ueno
further affirms that the cutting machine is
