TW44_AP_100x270mm_ApparelResou EDITOR'S PICK - 2018 August Bangladesh in FY 2017-18 posted an overall growth of 8.76 per cent on a year-on- year basis, exceeding the strategic export target of US $ 30.1 billion by 1.51 per cent already… November As the landmark year of 2021 is inching closer, Bangladesh seems to have stepped on the gas to achieve its long-cherished goal of US $ 50 billion in apparel exports. As per available data, Bangladesh has continued with its good show in both Europe and USA. If USA remained the top destination for the country’s apparel exports in the first three months of the current fiscal year registering a growth of around 3 per cent, countries from Europe have also been doing pretty good, barring UK. As per information from EPB, apparel exports to the US during July-September 2018 amounted to over US $ 1.5 billion, a 3 per cent growth from the US $ 1.45 billion worth of shipment during the same period last year. The scene is even more encouraging when it comes to Germany, which has emerged as the key growth accelerator, coming close behind USA in the second spot… The only dedicated marketplace pleasure to note the sector’s mercurial progress in terms of achieving workplace safety, and more so, its willingness and determination to carry forward the good work on its own. December In response to the High Court verdict, asking the Accord to leave Bangladesh by November 30, the Accord has approached the Supreme Court for a stay order on the verdict, further hearing for which is expected on December 6. In the run up to the exit of Accord from the country, the buyers’ platform has reportedly made clear its intentions to cut ties with around 532 garment factories for their allegedly poor progress in remediation. This news has caused flutter among the industry and has cast a spell of uncertainty. Significantly, many of these factories belong to industry leaders and office-bearers of BGMEA…How the exit will finally play out is being watched keenly by the industry, but it would certainly not be fair on the part of the industry if the Accord leaves without fulfilling its commitment to support the industry on its path towards safe manufacturing. 11 – 14 February 2019 Paris Le Bourget www.shawlsandscarves-paris.com www.apparelresources.com | January 2019 | Apparel Online Bangladesh TW44_AP_100x270mm_ApparelResources_SetS_Eng.indd 1 15 19/11/2018
