An Ethereal Revival Marking the launch of her latest collection, Anjul Bhandari speaks to Meera Warrier about her tryst with the art of chikankari. As I entered the Ensemble flagship in Kala Ghoda, I was greeted by Lata Mangeshkar’s In Aankhon ki Masti and the fragrance of mogra wafting around. It was in this setting that I met designer Anjul Bhandari, the lady whose warmth and grace reflects in her latest ‘Nayab-E-Zama’ collection. Launched in Lucknow in 2010 to exemplify and preserve the time-honoured craft of chikankari, Anjul Bhandari’s eponymous couture and prêt label dips into the City of Nawab’s fabled history and presents its legacy to the world with timeless heirloom pieces. Through this collection, Anjul offers new-world subtlety with old- world embroidery and silhouettes. The ensuing collection is replete with timeless designs that promise to become cherished wardrobe treasures. Once again, Anjul has given the classic chikankari a vibrant spin with Japanese pearls dyed in signature pastel shades of soft pinks and yellows to present dreamy ensembles. These pearls speak of vibrancy and elegance, making for perfect pieces for a bride and her entourage. 60 I APPAREL I November 2019
