DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT Another important part of her designing process is checking if different fabrics could be combined and worked on a single garment, at different places (such as on the sleeve). She also adds elements such as block-printed motifs, handmade cotton lace, and pintucks on the yoke, as and when required. Throughout the designing process, she ensures that the colour palette is kept muted and harmonious, and that the surface design and ornamentations do not overpower the inherent beauty of the fabric. SLOW FASHION From start to end, Khyati’s designing process alludes to slow fashion. “To be conscious in your work practice is a given. Sustainability is a day-to-day journey, there is no end goal to it. As a part of my design practice, it is imperative that I incorporate traditional hand-practices, procure locally made materials, incorporate timeless silhouettes, give attention to quality, focus on small-scale production, fair wages, and a healthy work environment, as well as be mindful of other things such as avoiding plastic packaging and recycling fabric waste into buttons, potlis, and patchwork, all of which will take us one step closer to conscious fashion.” Doing perfect justice to her label, she has waste fabric put in small pouches that is filled with petals and herbs—a fragrant little potpourri, which is packed in with the garments, and which can be hung in cupboards. Khyati’s garments are available on her website as well as e-commerce platforms that support slow, sustainable fashion, namely Jaypore, Nete.in, and The Loom, among others. Her clothes are also available at multi-designer stores in cities across the country, such as Options, Ahmedabad; Clove, Mumbai; Anonym, FROM START TO END, KHYATI’S DESIGNING PROCRESS ALLUDES TO SLOW FASHION. Hyderabad; Cinnamon, Bengaluru; Amethyst, Chennai; and Nimai, New Delhi. In the coming months, Khyati is looking at expanding the label’s presence in several other stores, along with working with a wider variety of handwoven fabrics and textiles, and also expanding and diversifying her colour palette. “What motivates me is to figure out how I can go deeper in this realm, combining creative thinking and intuition-informed decisiveness to bring out equanimuous designs,” she says in closing.
