The release also reiterated that the Government
is paying the whole 12 per cent of the employer’s
contribution towards the employee’s provident
fund and pension schemes. "Under Pradhan
Mantri Rojgar Protsahan Yojana (PMRPY), the
Government is providing entire 12 per cent of
the employer’s contribution towards Employee’s
Provident Fund (EPF) and Employee’s Pension
Scheme (EPS). Further, to make the apparel
sector competitive, the Government is providing
a rebate of State and Central taxes/levies
embedded in manufacturing,” it read further.
The share of imported apparel with respect
to the domestic apparel market in India is nearly
1.4 per cent. According to the statement, India’s
traditional textiles and synthetic materials cater to
different domestic market segments. Traditional
textiles and fabrics are primarily focused on
cotton, catering mainly to niche markets, while
the import of synthetic fabric is approximately
30 per cent that of the domestic production of
traditional textiles.
The Government is focused on equipping the
apparel industry to become more competitive
on the global front. Over the past few months,
the Ministry has taken several steps to bring the
industry together and steer a conversation in
this direction.

In addition to the apparel sector, Meghalaya
has also undertaken efforts to recognise the
aptitude of various artisans of the state. Under
this initiative, crafts such as woodwork, bamboo-
work, stone-carving, embroidering, pottery,
jewellery-making, and many more will receive aid
and support by the Government of India.
THE LAUNCH OF SU.RE
At the recently concluded Lakmé Fashion
Week Winter Festive 2019, the Hon’ble Textiles
Minister launched Project SU.RE that stands
for ‘Sustainable Resolution’, which is helmed
by The Clothing Manufacturers Association of
India (CMAI), United Nations in India, and IMG
Reliance, the organisers of Lakmé Fashion Week.
THE SAMARTH SCHEME ROLLED OUT
IN MEGHALAYA
As the foundation stone for the Integrated Textile
Tourism Complex in Meghalaya was laid, the
Samarth scheme was launched in the state.
Under the scheme, more than 7,000 young
people will be skilled in the apparel, garments,
textiles, and handloom sectors, and overall, a
record 30,000 citizens will be be trained. During
her address there, Smriti Irani iterated that this will
spur not just development in the sector of textiles
but will also bring about significant betterment in
the women’s and children’s sectors in the state.
