2015
2015 was a great year for designers as
eight out of 13 nominations have been
causing ripples in the industry. Ajay Kumar,
a graduate from NIFT, New Delhi, lends
menswear a kaleidoscopic touch with
intriguing print-on-print touches. Kriti Tula’s
Doodlage, which is now at the forefront
of sustainable fashion, has been creating
waves ever since its first showing. Jebin
Johny’s Jebsispar acquired quite a following
after his first showcase. Siddhartha Bansal’s
print-plays and vibrant designs forge
a stunning juxtaposition against trendy
silhouettes. Alan Alexander Kaleekal’s
Kaleekal made a strong impact on the ramp
and is now a name to reckon with. Manish
Bansal’s menswear, with sharp cuts, is what
fashionable men of today want. Priyanka
Ella Lorena Lama’s P. E. L. L. A., on the
other hand, features natural fabrics in Zen-
like silhouettes that appeal to buyers with a
minimalistic fashion sense. Salita Nanda’s
Western wear with prints and appliqué finds
favour with those seeking bright, new-age
clothing. Kanika Goyal, on the other hand,
brings a clever mix of textures with leather
and prints.
2016
Sohaya Misra, founder of Chola, was one of
the three standouts from the 11 shortlisted
participants in 2016. Known for her excessive
layering and oversized silhouettes as well as
now-agender creations, Sohaya’s looks have
helped her to leave a characteristic mark
on the runway. Gaurav Khanijo’s menswear
label speaks of experimental touches that are
favourites amid trendsetters, while Abhishek
Paatni, with his label, Nought One—also a
menswear label—has offered bold styling
sensibilities to the millennial male.
