print look with matching separates or a dress/
jumpsuit. You can even add a leopard print bag
or shoes if you’re feeling playful.” Animal prints
take on from leopard spots, zebra stripes and
others. It is, however, the leopard spots in a riot of
colours which stands out.
The season is huge on checks and stripes.
Florals and butterflies, always a part of summer,
are there in full measure. Tie-dye is doing well.
Along with animal prints, www.trendspotter.net
elaborates on tartan saying, “Leopard wasn’t
the only popular print for the Spring/Summer ’19
show season. Tartan also appeared on the streets
of New York, London, Paris and Milan. Of course,
in true fashion week style, the traditional print
wasn’t worn subtly. It was donned all over in eye-
catching colours by the fashion pack. Want to try
the look for yourself? Pick up a tartan suit, jacket
or pair of pants that features the classic pattern in
unique and bold colours such as red, blue, green
and yellow.”
Tartans usually have a Scottish accent.
Criss-cross checks have been prevalent across
countries over centuries, but tartan is linked to
Scottish designs. The website www.tartanregister.
co.uk describes tartan as, “The basis of any
tartan is a simple two-colour check to which the
designer adds overchecks, bands and stripes in
contrasting colours. These should be arranged
to result in a balanced and harmonious pattern.
Where two stripes of the same colour cross, a
block of solid colour is formed. Where different
colours cross, the two colours are mixed in
equal proportions to create a new colour. Ideally,
neither colour should ‘swamp’ the other; the two
together should make a new intermediate shade.”
It is therefore interesting to note that traditional
is also gaining grounds, albeit in a modern,
contemporary way.
INDIAN ACCENTS
In India, though, it is a mix of trends. Prints
are seen along with solids and contrasts. The
presence of ethnic wear makes classification
of Indian prints slightly tough as embroidery,
