Margin protection during inflation requires a feedback loop. It does not need to be complicated. Contractors can start with a simple rhythm: Interview a small group of strong customers. Ask why they choose your company, what they value most, where they feel risk, and what would make the experience better. Ask field leaders and key employees where margin is leaking. Focus on patterns, not complaints. Review a few recent jobs: the best margin, worst margin, most painful, smoothest, and most disputed. Compare customer expectations against employee experience. Then identify two or three changes to estimating, planning, communication, or execution. That might mean tightening scope language. Adjusting production assumptions. Improving pre-job handoffs. Repricing certain customers. Training sales teams to explain value more clearly. Changing which jobs the company pursues. Or building a stronger post-job review process. The point is not to gather feedback for the sake of feedback. The point is to make better decisions before the next bid goes out and before the next crew rolls out.
Inflation rewards clarity.
The contractors who protect margin in this environment will not be the ones who simply react to rising costs. They will be the ones who understand where profit is created, where it leaks, and what decisions need to change. Cost control still matters. Pricing discipline still matters. Production still matters. But in a high-inflation environment, margin protection starts earlier than the jobsite and goes deeper than the estimate. It starts with better insight from the customers buying the work and the employees building it.
The goal is not simply to charge more. The goal is to know what is worth charging for, where the business is losing profit, and how to align estimating, sales, operations, and leadership around better decisions. That is how asphalt contractors protect margin when inflation exposes the leaks.
