K9 Unit The K9 Unit responds to in- progress calls that meet the criteria for requesting K9 assistance on field calls. The unit is led by a sergeant and consists of four handlers, each with a K9 service dog. In 2019, the unit responded to 224 patrol assists, conducted 55 searches and had 5 K9 apprehensions. Police K9 handlers and dogs conduct regular demonstrations at community events and attend functions throughout the city including school visits, community meetings and festivals. Personnel attended 52 public appearances and made 777 public contacts. Officers assigned to the unit each drive Tahoes marked “K9 UNIT”. This is a reminder for the public that the unit utilizes working dogs and citizens should stay back for safety reasons. Officers assigned to the unit train on a regular basis and last year completed 2,752 hours of training. Two new handlers were selected due to unit transitions. Two new K9’s were added to the unit with the new handlers. K9 Raider and K9 Duke can be seen out on the street protecting the citizens of Arlington. Arlington, Texas Police Department | 43
