Support Operations Bureau Property & Evidence • The Property and Evidence Unit disposed 59,216 items last year. • A total of 32,586 items were booked into the Property and Evidence Room. • Personnel were cross-trained in various capacities to enhance the responsiveness and service delivery options where employees can assist in several different areas. 54 The Property and Evidence Unit houses all items pertaining to criminal offenses, found property, or safekeeping. The unit is staffed with a sergeant and seven professional staff employees. Officers book evidence and other items into Property and Evidence 24-hours a day. The unit also provides regular customer service hours for members of the public inquiring about items. In 2017, the unit disposed 59,216 items which was almost 20,000 more items as compared to the year before. Property disposal is achieved through court orders, destruction of illicit contraband, case dispositions, returning property to owners and other requirements set forth in legal statutes. The unit increased cross- training of all personnel to assist with enhanced service delivery options to better serve the department. As an example, employees may be trained in Annual Report 2017 several different categories from working the customer service window to handling release requests or DNA evidence items. The unit was also able to conduct a massive clean-up of the bicycle storage shed to make the acceptance of bikes more efficient. Team members also worked with Research and Development to improve data conversion and inputs with the new Records Management System.
