The Arlington Tactical Intelligence Unit( ATIU) is staffed with a sergeant, several detectives, and civilian analysts seven days a week. ATIU monitors for terrorist activity and provided real-time intelligence to officers. Field units can use ATIU for assistance on in-progress emergency calls. Also, detective units can call on ATIU for suspect work-ups on active investigations. ATIU monitors local, state, and national incidents. They also liaison with federal partners as it is warranted to evaluate and monitor potential criminal threats to the Arlington area. The Crime Analysis Unit( CAU) is staffed with civilian analysts and a civilian supervisor. CAU analysts are stationed in each patrol district, Criminal Investigations,
Special Investigations, and Operations Support Divisions. CAU is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and disseminating data to better understand the nature of criminal activity. CAU enhances the geographic policing model by providing predictive reports, which help direct police resources to prevent crime.
In 2017, CAU helped the department transition from Summary Uniform Crime Reporting( UCR) to the National Incident Based Reporting System( NIBRS) format. This transition represented a substantial paradigm shift in how the department evaluates the occurrence of crime, and the police response to it. CAU reorganized data reports and departmental reports to assist the department’ s move to NIBRS, and understanding of the new systems.
