The South Patrol District concentrated on several key initiatives to ensure good communication with several stakeholders that have a direct impact on the district. Citizen volunteers, business owners, faith leaders, and educators are a few of the groups that officers routinely met with in order to focus on issues that arose during 2016. A key component to crime reduction starts with relationships and open communication. Officers utilized a data-driven approach to address hot spot areas where crime trends emerged.
The Alternative Work Schedule pilot program was implemented that afforded employees an opportunity to work four 10-hour shifts versus the traditional schedule of five 8-hour shifts. The pilot program was successful and ultimately led to the alternative work schedule being offered in all four patrol districts.
One of the economic engines for the city includes the commercial corridor near the Parks Mall and Arlington Highlands. The district has a dedicated South Retail District Unit that provides primary patrol responses to calls in this area including proactive, preventative patrols. The safety of visitors and protection of merchants is vital to the continued success of this retail area. During the holiday period which kicks off after Thanksgiving, officers can regularly be seen directing traffic for ingress and egress to the malls and retail areas.
The South District hosted its 2 nd annual Trunk or Treat event on Halloween which attracted over 500 visitors. The event was a huge hit with kids and adults alike. Officers reported that the relationships built during this annual event allows citizens to put a name to the faces they see patrolling their streets.
