The influence of the AACCP on
breeding-stock -Northern Region-
TUCUMÁN
By Federico Pasquini
Tucumán is an example that it is possible to breed
polo ponies even for the High Goal, despite the 1,200
Kms that separate it from Bs. As., using our Breeders’
Association as a guide, and private initiative as an
engine. since many were bought without being tried. At the
time (80’s and 90’s) it was not possible to buy good,
recognized polo genetics, or at least, neither the
information nor the products we have today were
available.
My father had a breeding-stock based 100% on
Thoroughbred Racehorses, with varying results as
regards efficiency in producing polo ponies. Very few
good horses resulted and their type was very uneven
(tall; long limbed; they were not cast in the same
mold). Dams and stallions had been selected for their
pedigree, but based on speed and not sensitivity, In 2001 I traveled to Buenos Aires for the Rural
Exhibition at Palermo, and for the first time saw the
judging of Polo Argentino ponies in the central arena,
and what I saw changed my blood-stock and also,
fortunately, the blood-stock of many breeders in
Tucumán.
