reproduction, and whom I worked with for three years. He let loose the stallions on a farm in Choele- Choel, and I brought five wild ones back with me. Fifteen minutes later we had mounted them, but that is because they have a moment of stupidity; become blocked, and we took advantage of that moment.” BB: “An important question: are you going to retire from seeing to your bloodstock or are you going to continue breeding?” APH: “The truth is that I’m 76 and have horses for eight more years. That is the situation. I feel I’m no longer capable of doing things myself. I now only mount tame horses and even then, with a small step by the pony lines to be able to mount. My legs are no longer what they were, and I may fall off a new horse. Nowadays I enjoy organizing other people’s herds. Imagine, when I had my farm, around about ‘84, I started breeding for my sons. At the time I had already begun to keep genetics from different bloodstocks, and when I put together my herd I kept the genetics of some mares that historically had produced good offspring and so founded my own bloodstock.” BB: “How did you manage to distribute your herd?” APH: “Well, I had 14 dams which I split up: 7 on one side; 7 on another with two stallions. I created two herds, I called for an umpire and some went to Pepe and his children, and others to Eduardo and his. I compensated Tomás with a good mare and I gave him the womb of Catástrofe. I gave Nachi two very good mares: Gamuza, which he already has, and another that he has not taken away with him yet: I don’t know which he will choose… whichever he prefers.” “Having had a winning stallion in the AACCP ranking; having won pony awards in the Open; having produced a bloodline based on Nevadito and Pureza; to have been able, up to this day, to hand over to my grandchildren all the work I’ve done during my time as a breeder and which I have finished today; and to have been able to clone Pureza. All these things have given me great joy. A lifetime with horses” BB: “With all these years as a breeder, what is your final assessment?” APH: “Well, with all this that I’ve been telling you about, I could round it all up by saying that I feel very satisfied about the objectives I’d set for myself: having had a winning stallion in the AACCP ranking; having won pony awards in the Open; having produced a bloodline based on Nevadito and Pureza; to have been able, up to this day, to hand over to my grandchildren all the work I’ve done during my time as a breeder and which I have finished today; and to have been able to clone Pureza. All these things have given me great joy. A lifetime with horses.” 235
