A roundtable on the Rohingya in Malaysia Home to thousands of Rohingya refugees, Malaysia is one of the few countries leading the effort to bring awareness to the Rohingya crisis on an international level. This roundtable expanded on recent discussions on the rights of Rohingya and other refugees in Malaysia by providing a platform to discuss practical and sustainable legal and policy solutions to this crisis in Malaysia. It also discussed the limitations and opportunities within current international refugee policy concerning long-term support for refugees. Impact assessment workshop for social workers dealing with at-risk youth This workshop led by Dr Melissa Wong from the School of Arts and Social Sciences taught impact assessment practices to social workers at the non-governmental organisation Generasi Gemiliang. These workers had experienced difficulties in assessing the success and quality of the teaching they conduct in their various outreach and social programs. The skills revolved around research methodology, using simplified approaches to ensure their applicability to everyday evaluation of programs. Donation drive for Agathians Shelter Developing strong partnerships to aid refugees The School of Business, through the United Nations' Principles of Responsible Management Education and Entrepreneurship and the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub, collaborated with multiple organisations to implement the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' Social Protection Fund program. Three workshops were conducted over the year to strengthen the capacity of seven refugee community-based organisations and to ensure adequate support for community-led projects to promote self-reliance within the refugee communities. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Monash University Malaysia, the School of Science organised the charity drive program ‘Sponsor a Meal’. The proceeds were donated to the Agathians Shelter Home that is currently housing 40 boys in Petaling Jaya. Staff and students visited the shelter and spent the day introducing science to the children by making volcanoes, balloon-powered cars, and colour-changing milk, and conducting a raindrop experiment together. 36
