Measuring ‘halalness’ A Research Seminar Series presentation held by the Global Asia in the 21st Century research platform revolved around the question of how to determine the ‘halalness’ of restaurants without a halal logo display. Dr Ghazala Khan’s study on ‘Ascertaining the Halalness of Restaurants: Scale Development and Validation’ was inspired by her observation that Muslims may need a clear guide on selecting restaurants, especially while travelling in non-Muslim countries. Research Data Day seminar Understanding the impact of smart manufacturing in policy and regulatory approaches An Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) seminar was held as part of an ongoing study to gauge current policy and regulatory approaches of APEC economies for smart manufacturing, and to develop best practices and recommendations for them. Various APEC economies attended the seminar which provided a platform to exchange ideas and best practices as well as to engage with local players and industries. Hosted by the Library during Open Access Week, this seminar attracted Monash researchers and staff, library colleagues and guest speakers from Australia, Japan, Vietnam and Malaysia. The event convened various stakeholders to reflect, explore and debate broad issues of research data management, open access and open science in a digital environment. Enhancing research knowledge A series of public workshops on research methods was held on campus for academics, graduate students and non-academic researchers from Monash and other local universities. Topics included ‘Introduction to Ensembl’, ‘UCSC Genome Browser’, ‘The Power of Statistics’, and ‘The Road to High Impact Publications’. In the latter, which was jointly organised by the Professors Advisory Group with the Library and the Research Management Office, the keynote presentation examined best practices underpinning good science, quality research and high-impact publications. The lecture was complemented by an interactive talk on ‘Advanced Literature Search for Research’ and discipline-specific breakout sessions which discussed the challenges and leading practices relating to academic publishing. Targeted proteomic, sample workflow and data analysis workshop The Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry platform worked with Agilent Technologies to conduct two workshops this year. The first workshop provided basic knowledge on sample preparation and data analysis in targeted proteomics, while the second workshop focussed on integrative omics via mass spectrometry. Induced pluripotent stem cell technology in neuroscience The 4th International Brain Research Organisation-Asia Pacific Regional Advanced School of Neuroscience was hosted by the Brain Research Institute Monash Sunway. Eminent scientists from around the region conducted hands-on lab sessions and technical lectures focussing on the use of induced pluripotent stem cell technology in neuroscience. 28
