CIMB Book Prize Chinese Government Scholarship Three Banking and Finance students – Vivi Setiawaty, Lai Wanqing and Andrew Lim Ken Wern – were awarded the Commerce International Merchant Bankers (CIMB) Book Prize which included cash prizes and an internship at the bank. CIMB Malaysia awards high-achieving students from the School of Business annually. Lee Chee Leong from the School of Arts and Social Sciences was awarded the coveted Chinese Government Scholarship (Bilateral Program-Malaysia), which gave him the opportunity to conduct fieldwork for nine months in Nanning city, Guangxi. Lee was also admitted as Visiting Senior Scholar at the Guangxi University for Nationalities. Canadian Undergraduate Research Award Abbvie Young Leaders Award More than 10 students from the School of Pharmacy were recognised for their outstanding academic performances by Abbvie Malaysia. The top three final-year students were given cash prizes and an internship with the organisation. Monash and Abbvie have been in partnership since 2012 to provide education grants and awards to deserving students. Third-year Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering student Vinodh Rajagopal Muthu received a competitive Undergraduate Research Award from the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo in Canada. The award gave him the opportunity to spend the summer at Waterloo’s Nano-Photonics and Quantum Optics Lab led by Professor Michal Bajcsy. Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) Prize Science student detects error in genomic classification Final-year student Phuong N. Tran from the School of Science and her team of researchers detected a species misidentification and new genospecies within the genus Pseudomonas. Pseudomonas has one of the largest diversity of species within the bacteria kingdom, and its reclassification will assist future comparative genomics analysis studies. Her research was published in Frontiers in Microbiology, a Q1 high-impact microbiology journal. Awarded to the highest achieving Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) student across all cohorts in Clayton and Malaysia each calendar year, 2017's prize went to Victoria Tan Phooi Kei who bested 113 fellow students. She was supervised by Professor Ishwar Parhar and Dr Shogo Moriya for her project titled 'Investigati on of Molecular Mechanisms of Parkinson’s Disease'. CPA Australia & BDO Book Prize Award School of Business students Teh Ju Li, Yoong Su Li and Yeoh Hui Jin were recognised for their academic excellence by Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Australia and Binder Dijker & Otte Co (BDO) Malaysia. All were presented with certificates and cash prizes. 16
