Dear Colleagues ,
Amid these unprecedented times , our communities and our nation have numerous challenges . Yet despite these challenges , we are filled with gratitude . We are grateful for the united response between the University of Alabama at Birmingham and our community partners to ensure almost immediate access to testing , personal protective equipment , and the tools and technology needed to continue caring for our patients . We are grateful to our teams and community partners for demonstrating unbelievable dedication , flexibility , and innovation in ensuring essentially uninterrupted service for our transplant recipients and those awaiting lifesaving organs .

Our strength together as a united front – independent of race and creed – made the difference . We celebrate these collaborations in this year ’ s Comprehensive Transplant Institute ( CTI ) report , which highlights not only programmatic advances and UAB ’ s dedication to innovative , high-quality care , but also the patient experience . Within these pages , you will see patient faces and read their triumphant stories . These are remarkable individuals who , with hope for a better future restored , remind us all of our shared humanity .
It is our privilege to serve such individuals and to do so side by side with our community partners . May 2021 offer the promise of new beginnings and a shared future .
