Message from the Registrar & CEO

Improving access to great care

Welcome to CPSO ’ s 2023 Annual Report . Despite the unprecedented challenges and constraints faced by our health-care system , I take pride in the continuous improvements we have made in regulating the practice of medicine in Ontario .

In 2023 , CPSO made great strides in applying the principles of right-touch regulation . We prioritized creating new pathways for internationally trained physicians to receive a licence to practise medicine in Ontario , registering an additional 426 physicians – 175 family physicians and 251 specialists – between April and December of 2023 . This vital work will continue to be a priority in 2024 . physicians in their practice . In 2023 , more than 5,500 physicians participated in one of these programs and we expect participation to grow in 2024 .
In closing , I ’ d like to thank our Board of Directors , chaired by Dr . Rob Gratton , for their exemplary work on many fronts in 2023 , including the ongoing modernization of our governance structure , and extend a warm welcome to 2024 Board Chair Dr . Ian Preyra .
As we continue our path forward , I encourage you to read the Annual Report to learn more about our 2023 results and gain insight into what ’ s on the horizon for 2024 .
We also exceeded the targets of all 10 key performance indicators in 2023 . Our streamlined processes and use of alternative dispute resolution saw us close complaint files within 142 days of receipt , well within our goal of 150 days . We remain committed to resolving issues through education and early resolution , whenever possible .
Our Quality Improvement Program began as a pilot in 2019 and continues to be a priority for us as we support
