QUALITY CARE

Enabling physicians to perform to the highest standards

CPSO plays a key role in ensuring that physicians demonstrate a commitment to ongoing learning and take proactive steps to integrate new knowledge into their practice . We do this by developing policies that provide guidance for practice , providing opportunities for continuous improvement and maintaining expectations for the quality of care delivered in Out-of-Hospital Premises ( OHPs ).

Practice Expectations
We develop and maintain practice expectations for Ontario physicians , generally though policies and guidance documents . These documents provide guidance for physicians and enable the public and patients to understand what they should expect when receiving care from their physicians .
To keep expectations current , we identify when standards of practice , policies or guidelines need to be updated or when new guidance is required . When updating expectations , we consider relevant evidence , changing expectations , risks to the public and alignment with other relevant health professions . This process includes consideration of feedback from relevant stakeholders , including patients and their families .
In 2023 , we consulted on and / or approved the following practice policies :
Decision Making for End-of-Life Care ( Approved ) Medical Assistance in Dying ( Approved ) Human Rights in the Provision of Health Services ( Approved ) Conflicts of Interest and Industry Relationships ( Consultation ) Physician Behaviour in the Professional Environment ( Consultation ) Practice Guide ( Consultation )
Quality Improvement
Our Quality Improvement ( QI ) programs enable us to facilitate a connection with physicians every five years and guide them in creating favourable conditions for success in their practice . Depending on individual circumstances , physicians may choose to complete their Quality requirements entirely online as an individual , as part of a small group , or through leveraging their active participation in an approved QI initiative with their hospital .
In 2023 , we exceeded our goal of enrolling 5,000 physicians , with more than 5,500 physicians participating
