Expedited Assessment Benchmark
In 2022 , CPSO registered 6,108 new doctors , the most ever in our history . But with so many Ontarians unable to access the medical care they need , it is clear that more needs to be done .
Given the pressures placed on a strained health care system , CPSO has made it an ongoing priority to find creative solutions to help address physician supply in Ontario .
When the Ontario government asked us in August 2022 to expeditiously register out-ofprovince and internationally educated physicians ( IEPs ) to provide relief to a health system in crisis , we were well-positioned to help . The pandemic , in fact , had seen us leverage every licensing mechanism available to us within the parameters of the current legislative framework in order to nimbly license physicians . We also implemented efficiencies and innovations that allowed us to process applications of physicians in a timely manner , while maintaining the integrity of necessary validation or assessment processes .
Expanding access , reducing barriers to independent practice
Shortly after receiving the Minister ’ s request , we began evaluating whether additional pathways or equivalencies to registration can be explored to make independent practice in Ontario possible for more physicians .
One of our first decisions was to remove additional requirements on our Acceptable Qualifying Examinations policy , which allows individuals a path to an independent certificate by allowing alternatives to the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada ( LMCC ) qualification , thereby reducing barriers for those who have completed equivalent examinations .
