Reduced barriers to registration for US physicians
Registration
We also created a new class of registration to support physician mobility into Ontario . The Temporary Independent Class of Licensure regulation provides a more flexible option for potential applicants who wish to assist with system needs on a temporary basis , enabling them to practice at full scope , and reducing the administrative burden for all involved .
To inject immediate resources into the system , we did a Call-out to Recently Retired Physicians . CPSO waived application fees and adopted a flexible approach to re-entry requirements .
We were pleased when the government announced it was reviving plans for a program that fasttracks IEPs into the work force . In 2022 , we supported the early development of a Practice Ready Assessment program in preparation for significant work in 2023 .
Call-out to recently retired physicians
For many IEPs , Ontario residency programs offer an opportunity to complete their training and establish their careers in the province . As only a small number of residency positions are accessible to IEPs , Ontario had been essentially limiting the opportunity to quickly grow our base of future physicians and support IEPs . We asked government to immediately increase the number of residency positions available to IEPs . The government responded by announcing an additional 160 undergraduate seats and 295 postgraduate positions in the province over the next five years .
Reduced barriers to registration for US physicians
By the end of 2022 , we had two more policies ready to be put into action in 2023 . We amended a
policy that reduces barriers to registration for US board-certified physicians and introduced a route for US board eligible physicians . Corresponding amendments to another policy allows them to be recognized as specialists in Ontario . We also made revisions to a policy that removes supervision and assessment requirements for physicians who have received certification without examination by the CFPC , but have not obtained the LMCC or completed the MCCQE Part 1 or an acceptable alternative . The policy grants registrants a scope-limited restricted certificate of registration to practise independently .
In short , we followed up on the government ’ s directive by finding creative , innovative ways to attract more physicians to Ontario .
These programs are used in seven provinces across Canada to support the licensure of IEPs who have already completed their training and practised independently abroad .
CPSO has long supported such a program in Ontario .
