System Collaboration

They say that nobody succeeds at something big on their own , and that is certainly the case for us in 2021 . We have a significant and important role to play in Ontario ’ s health-care sector , but we cannot fulfill that role without collaborating with our many partners and stakeholders . These include patient advocacy groups , hospital leaders , and the provincial and federal governments , Public Health , the Ontario Medical Association , the Canadian Medical Protective Association , our fellow regulators in the health care space , and , yes , even the media .
This kind of system-wide collaboration was , of course , paramount in 2021 as we continued to do battle with the COVID-19 pandemic . But there were many other issues and challenges we needed to face throughout the year , and we faced them by working together with our many system partners . Here are a few of the highlights from 2021 .
CPSO and Hospitals – Partners in Quality
In 2020 , CPSO launched its Quality Improvement ( QI ) Program for all physicians in Ontario , and this program continued and expanded throughout 2021 . In transforming our approach , we moved from a single point-in-time assessment model to a much more proactive approach .
As part of this program , CPSO partnered with 20 + hospitals to develop and align QI initiatives for eligible hospital-based physicians , reducing administrative burdens by streamlining their quality requirements . The Partnership Program recognizes the oversight that already exists for hospitalbased physicians and the quality activity they may already be doing . For the Partnership Program , physicians can collaborate with their hospital colleagues on QI initiatives that are relevant to their hospital practice and align with the strategic direction of their organization .
We received submissions from and approvals for many types of hospital settings : including small and medium community hospitals , large urban hospitals , single-site and multi-site organizations , as well as academic and non-academic hospitals . The physicians included in the partnership get to work on quality improvement projects and initiatives tailored to their own clinical environments , ensuring that the improvements they make can be applied to their real-world practice scenarios going forward .
