DEMONSTRATION SITE FIELD DAYS ENCOURAGE PRODUCTIVE DISCUSSIONS
A series of funding opportunities through our Growing a Great Barrier Reef project encouraged graziers to implement practice change and share the results with neighbouring properties . Each of the ‘ Over the Fence Demonstration Sites ” aimed to improve land condition and reduce fine sediment runoff from grazing lands .
Sharing knowledge was a key aim , so each property committed to hosting a field day to share their work with neighbours and have a discussion around water quality and productivity . Nearly 40 properties , located between Alpha and Greenvale , participated in the program . Treatments included installing erosion control banks ( whoa boys ), fencing to protect sensitive areas , spreading water points to ease grazing pressure , and mechanical interventions such as earthworks to remediate larger-scale gully systems .
Graziers demonstrating a new water trough design on Lestree Downs Station , 100km west of Clermont . The plastic water trough is lighter and easier to install and transport , and is used to spread grazing pressure .
