Milestone Manitoba Achievement
Manitobans will soon be able to take advantage of the entire 385 kilometres
of trail through some of the province's most beautiful parks and landscapes
thanks to the Border to Beaches trail project. The federal and provincial governments
and private donations have contributed more than $4 million to the
project under the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component program,
which has now been fully expended by Trails Manitoba towards the project.
To date Trails Manitoba has received $9 million in provincial, federal and
private donations in capital and operational funding for Trails Manitoba and
Trans Canada Trail for trail development in the province. Trails Manitoba was
formed in 1997 by a group of retired civil servants
to take over rail lines in order to convert them into
trails, rails to trails. Trails Manitoba was subsequently
asked to assume the responsibility of
connecting The Great Trail in Manitoba and to
assist trail associations in the construction and
promotion of recreational trails. There are currently
21 regional volunteer trail associations in the
province.
