B. Unique accomplishments Recognition The Carlos Rosario community is particularly proud of the significant recognition that it received during the 2007-08 school year: • The Carlos Rosario Culinary Arts Program: As a result of the exemplary management of our kitchen facilities in the areas of sanitation, facility layout, and personnel, the DC Department of Health produced a training video of Carlos Rosario’s commercial kitchen in May 2008. This video will be posted on the Department of Health’s website and will serve as a training tool for entrepreneurs, business owners, and others in the DC community. • In April, Sonia Gutierrez, CEO and Founder, received the Humanitarian of the Year award from The Latin America Taskforce Network at River Road Unitarian Universalist Church. • On World Teachers Day, Dr. Ryan Monroe was recognized by TESOL for providing quality ESL teacher preparation. Noteworthy Efforts • Nine Carlos Rosario teachers presented at the Washington Area Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (WATESOL) Fall and Spring Conventions. • The first Carlos Rosario literary magazine with writings by students at all levels of English proficiency, In Their Own Words, was published. • In March, Carlos Rosario’s Student Resource Room had its grand opening. In this space, students have a quiet, comfortable environment in which to study and read, use computers, and check out library materials. • Two Carlos Rosario faculty members published articles for ESL related periodicals - Focus On Basics and WATESOL News. • The Carlos Rosario Hospitality Committee continued with the coordination of activities that fosters community and teamwork by supporting and celebrating each other. The committee celebrated quarterly birthdays for staff and faculty, organized new births, weddings, retirements and other celebrations, and distributed get well, sympathy and other cards, flowers and plants, as means of encouragement and support. The committee once again hosted and organized the end-of-year family picnic, which was a huge success. Information Technology Accomplishments • Two 20-station computer labs were combined into one 40-station lab in order to serve larger class sizes for longer periods of time. This involved some electrical re-wiring, purchasing an additional interactive whiteboard and networking three interactive whiteboards together to assure a good visual experience for the students.
