Extra-curricular Activities: The 2005-2006 school year proved to be an exceptional year for extra-curricular activities. Over 19 activities were open to students throughout the school year. The faculty at Carlos Rosario continues to push the realms of creativity! The following is a highlight of extra-curricular activities offered this school year: Creative Drawing, Knitting Club, Piano Lessons (Beginner and Intermediate), Chess Club, Salsa Dance Class, African Drumming, Reading Club, Computer Club, Conversation, GED, International Women’s Lunch Hour and Yoga. Legal Clinic: The DC Bar held Free Legal Clinics on: September 17th, December 2nd, March 3rd and June 3rd. The clinics were open to the Carlos Rosario student body and the community at large. At every clinic there were approximately 20 lawyers volunteering their time to counsel students and community members with regards to legal matters. We look forward to working with the DC Bar in the 2006-2007 school year! Tax Preparation: The Supportive Services Department provided free tax preparation services to students to file their federal and district taxes on time. The free tax services were provided from February 20th through April 12th. Ninety-six students proudly filed their taxes, resulting in $85,101.00 of taxes paid to the District of Columbia government and $143,880.21 of taxes paid to the United States federal government, amounting to a tremendous grand total of $228,981.21 filed. Hearing/Vision Screenings: Prevention of Blindness Society of the Metropolitan Area and a team of independent audiologists performed vision and hearing screenings for one week during the month of May. A total of 198 students had their hearing screened and 100 had their vision screened. Those with less than average results were referred to the proper specialists. We are excited about the prospect of increasing these numbers in the 2006-2007 school year! PEPCO Utility Discount Day: PEPCO representatives enrolled 31 students in their utility discount program. We look forward to working with PEPCO in the 2006-2007 school year. The Youth Club was one of the many activities lead by the Supportive Services Department.
