Conscience Conquers the Armada
The large orange drapes sway on the Spanish ships
but gently as conscience unforced
by the rough winds of inquisition.
Drapes begotten of English fires now
make slow dancing notice to crowns
who would press battle to the sanctuary
of man's mind.
A woman feels the creeping dew
advance under her boots as she
stares at an ebony canvas
splashed bright with Spanish sails on fire.
