Landscapes at Sunset: Two Sketches
I. Winter Dream
The last drops of sunlight vanish from the cracked
china-blue bowl of the sky
behind a blood-orange horizon penetrated by an uprising of cypresses
in remote, snow-laden woods on the verge
of apocalyptic renovation.
II. Libations to Eros
The fireball-red disc of the sun sinks
in a dying blaze of orange, highlighting the half-ruined
amphitheater of barren branches, black stick figures
motionless in a silent libation to Eros, roots unearthed
in a former fit of ecstasy cast off into the dust, regeneration
for the terminal ritual of another tomorrow.
