Litter on the loose
Although the ocean is known as a natural and pristine environment, pollution has become a huge problem over the years. There is no excuse for litter as nearly all of it is man-made. If we don't dispose of our waste properly it normally ends up in the ocean or another natural environment. When rubbish travels to the ocean many animals mistake it for food and eat it as a meal. For example many turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. Once the waste has been digested in an animals body, it usually suffocates them by blocking their aways or gets stuck in their stomach. The rings around plastic drink bottles also contribute as the plastic rings around them usually suffocate marine life. Waste and plastic takes a very long period of time for the Earth to decompose so the waste that ends up in the ocean usually washes up on the shore of beaches. Not only does it pollute beaches but can ruin habitats on the beach as well.
Pollution can be powerful
Sewerage can be harmful
When people dispose of there waste they normally think that is treated and goes a long way out to sea. Most sewerage that comes from the major cities is untreated and can affect marine life. It can also wash up on the shores of beaches and cause human diseases and beach closures.
Nearly every form of marine life has some form of man-made chemical in their system such as pesticides, chemical weapons and radioactive waste. This is caused through purposely dumping waste or chemical fumes. Most form of chemicals come from activities performed on land. The soil,
water, and air can all absorb these chemicals and then be transported to the ocean. Animals as tiny as plankton can draw in these chemicals, and as you go up the food chain more animals will be affected as they draw in the chemicals from their food.
