THE MESSAGE. BRINGING INTO FOCUS FILIPINO PRESENCE IN AUSTRALIA www.kalatas.com.au | Volume 4 Number 7 | April 2014 ENTERTAINMENT SHOWBIZ NEWS: James Reid barges into the big league FILIPINO-AUSTRALIAN James Reid will surely be one of the young actors to watch in Philippine showbiz. THE release this month of the movie ‘Diary ng Panget’ in Metro Manila has been well-received and movie lovers are now finding a new idol in James. ‘Diary ng Panget’ movie is based on the bestselling online book by Filipino author Denny better known as ‘Have You Seen ThisGirl’ in the online publishing circle. James is definitely not the ‘panget’ in this movie. He plays the role of ‘Cross Sandford’ – a handsome, rich teenager who works as a model. The ‘panget’ role in the movie is actually played by pretty Nadine Lustre (‘pangetised’ only by make-up). Nadine is Eya Rodriguez, the protagonist and narrator of the story who describes herself as an ‘ugly girl’. But it is James who’s becoming a revelation in the movie. A celebrity column in gulfnews.com described him as prob- ably ‘the next big thing’ and that he is the next player in the big leagues. “I’ve waited long for this break and I think it’s time. It’s my time. And I have worked hard for this. I learned Tagalog, and although it’s not perfect, it’s better than when I started,” James said about his movie break in the gulfnews. com report. James who will turn 21 next month first became popular in the Philippines via TV when he won the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Clash in 2010. His mother is Filipino and a website reports that ‘sinigang’ is one of his favourite dishes. He’s into gymnastics and swimming which probably explains why he’s in such great shape. ‘Diary ng Panget’ the movie has been produced by Viva Films. The story was first released in an online publishing site Wattpad and revolves around a teenage girl struggling to make ends meet. THE Marilag Dance Company set the mood for a ‘Rural Fiesta Sa Nayon’ at the Central Coast Filipino Festival last month at Mingara, Tumbi Umbi by performing a traditional Maria Clara dance to the tune of the folk songs, Fiesta and Lulay.
