EVERY day in our lives, we tend to come across
men and women who have extraordinary talents
– be it singing, sketching, dancing and what not.
When we realise that these talents are going
to die with the individuals without being polished, without being exhibited to a wider audience … sigh ... It’s painful to say the least.
Theatre has been called the great leveler. It
is that common thread that binds people from
all sorts of social and economic status, the love of
Art; when the driving force that makes an individual commit to a production is far from mere
financial gains; when the raison d’être is a crazy
quest to excel and stand out of the crowd. It is

where we can come across people who can teach
us things which no school, varsity or corporate
workplace can ever teach which ultimately only
immersion in a community theatre group can
provide.
One of the greatest lesson in theatre is-to
have fun and throw out your egos. It’s a tricky
balance; one minute you are required as an actor to throw away your inhibitions, shyness and
be bold; next thing is your holding off a possible
ego surge and vanity!
For these reasons, PETAWA (Philippine Educational Artist of Western Australia) was born.
As its maiden offering for the Filipino Australian community of Perth, it will premier an
original One Act Play entitled ‘It’s Time To Go!’
Aubrey Panteras plays the role of
retired torch singer, Nini Madriaga.
Art Soriano ( Aussie Pinoy Productions) plays the Host/Grim Reaper.
( written and directed by Filipinas-Petals founding President, Benny Chan Jr.)
This black comedy is written in English, and
deals about Life, Love and Death.
It will showcase local neophytes from the Filipino community, top-billed by Chit Bloubin,
Yolanda Payne, Aubrey Panteras, Rowena Cajustin, and playing the Host/Grim Reaper is the
company’s Secretary - Art Soriano.

Review: Aegis concert
by OLIVER GADISTA
W
hat’s the first thing that comes to
mind when one hears about an
event organised by Filipinos? It
always starts late.
The recent Aegis concert at
Mounties, Mt Pritchard was a success although the
show started half an hour later than the scheduled
time. That was expected anyway. Gale Force opened
the show with their rendition of Van Halen’s ‘Jump’.
Great choice of song, I thought, but I was a little disappointed with the band’s energy or lack of it. The front act
singers did a magnificent job as well with their versions
of Tagalog and English songs. The transitions between
songs were clever but the nerves on some of the artists
were a bit more obvious than others. I have seen some
of them perform previously and I know they could do
so much better.
The second set belonged to Joey Pepe Smith and
Wally Gonzales who did an acoustic number of their
hit songs. It was raw, a little bit rough at times, but that’s
Rock and Roll. I have never seen Joey Pepe live before
and was impressed on how well he connected with the
audience. Wally’s Blues done acoustically was executed perfectly, with Wally showing off his guitar virtuosity and Joey Pepe providing the rhythm, it was an experience indeed. The best sing-a-long song from their
set would have to be ‘Ang Himig Natin’ that got everyone singing.
It was close to 10pm when Aegis got on the stage.
I have heard some of their songs before but have never seen them live. Their songs are definitely for masses
and their melodies somewhat familiar that you can sing
along with even only after hearing it for the first time.
Aegis has been around since the late 90’s and with 10
