On Thursday, August 17, 2017 a 22-year- old Moroccan national, Younes Abouyaaqoub, was alleged to have been the sole driver of a van that mowed down strollers on Las Ramblas, a thoroughfare in the city of Barcelona that's a popular tourist destination. Julian and his mother Jumarie, in the city on a holiday to attend a wedding, were among those struck down. Jumarie was taken to hospital and stayed in a coma for days. It took some time for police to find Julian’s body. Got no time to go to the store? Subrscribe and get AK delivered to your maibox for only $30 for 12 issues. We have always grieved for victims’ families elsewhere in the world who have suffered the brutality of terrorists’ heinous crimes against innocent people. But grief is compounded with anger when the victim is one of us, especially one who lived in our neighborhood; one so innocent. Indeed, Julian’s killing crystallises our determination to help rid our world of terrorism in all its forms. It reminds us to be more vigilant and to fear not taking steps toward helping our authorities seek out and identify terrorists, to kill 13 people and possibly prevent acts of terrorism. We can make sure that Julian Cadman didn’t die in vain. n News Features 05 . . . . . Filipinos’ shining star rising to the challenge 07 . . . . .
