You Do the Math: adding and
multiplying images
Print Fusion: traditional
printmaking and digital printing
David Hilliard & Jonathan Singer
Jennifer Ghormley
Skill Level: III - IV
Skill Level: II - III, Photoshop experience required.
Concept: Images take on new meaning when
grouped or layered together. A narrative may
unfold or perhaps a visual diary. A surprise or
challenge always awaits. Question the idea
of the photograph as a single moment as you
piece together images then rearrange or recontextualize them. Time and space are yours
to invent and reinvent as you create panoramas, grids, books or installations.
Concept: Explore contemporary print media:
tradition and innovation. Investigate practical
questions such as, What is a pre-coat? Can I
print on fabric or found papers? How do I print
an etching or woodcut plate on a digital print?
Designed for printmakers and artists eager
to explore new media, we combine digital
images with traditional print processes to create a cohesive print.
Media & Techniques: The workshop covers digital capture and digital work flow from
image capture to final print.
Media & Techniques: We cover digital workflow, basic scanning, Photoshop techniques,
digital printing on fine art paper and fabric. We
combine images with trace monotype, stencils, dry point, woodcut, paper plate lithograph,
Pronto-Plate lithograph, multiple plate registration and transparent color layering. We demonstrate pre-coat on porous and nonporous
surfaces, white ground and BFK paper.
Alternative Processes
Jill Enfield
Skill Level: I - III
Activities: We examine work by students and
other artists working with multiple images.
Classroom critique and discussion are key
components of the experience. We encourage you to create a cohesive body of work that
speaks directly to your personal vision with
strong emphasis on the craft of fine art digital
printmaking and digital work flow.
Faculty: David Hilliard received his MFA from
Yale University. He has taught at Harvard University and the Cranbrook Academy of Art.
David exhibits his photographs nationally and
internationally. He has won numerous awards
including the Fulbright and a Guggenheim Fellowship. www.davidhilliard.com
Jonathan Singer is a photographer, printmaker
and founder of Singer Editions, a fine art digital
printmaking atelier specializing in the production of limited-edition photography.
Sponsored by Karen and Jim Frank
Tuition: $1250 / Studio Support Cost: $1450
Studio Fee: $130 Code: P0510 Enrollment Limit: 10
Activities: Demonstrations cover color management, printing profiles, digital printing
on alternative substrates, pre- and post-coat
methods, and layering digital prints with traditional printmaking media. We encourage you to
bring existing printmaking plates (or make new
ones) for experimentation. You may bring a laptop, USB jump drive or burnable CDs, existing
digital images, a digital camera to capture new
source material.
Concept: Early photographic processes present a compelling alternative to silver and digital prints. Using only fine quality paper, handapplied emulsion and simple technology, learn
to prepare paper and digital negatives for
printing with cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown and
kallitype.
Media & Techniques: We work with digital negatives on ink press transparency media along
with paper negatives, cyanotypes, Van Dyke
Brown prints and kallitypes. We use Adobe
Photoshop software and digital printers.
Activities: The workshop consists of morning demonstrations and afternoon studio work
sessions each day to allow students to work
with all processes.
Faculty: Jill Enfield received her BFA from
New York University. She teaches at Parsons
School of Design and workshops around the
world. Her book: Photo-Imaging: A Complete
Guide To Alternative Processes was published
in 2002 and is used in schools throughout
the US. Jill’s commercial clients include Fortune magazine, Kodak, Hasselblad, Nikon,
LIFE, National Geographic and The New York
Times Magazine. Her latest series, portraits of
immigrants, was shown at Ellis Island in 2009.
