Animation literally means “give life to,” our theme in this workshop as we design and create our own characters or inanimate forms and bring them to life. Students explore character design, story boarding and stop frame, and 2-D animation techniques. We examine different genres of animation and discover the cinematic magic of combining line, color and form with motion and sound. We gain technical competence through an introduction to DSLR camera operation and the post-production process. Students are encouraged to bring ideas for a character (human, animal, imaginary or abstract) and favorite art materials. CONCEPT: Defining, sustaining and evolving an artistic vision are challenges for artists across the board. This workshop guides students in developing and defining the personal voice through intense discussion, focused reflection and honing photographic skills. We begin each day by examining the work of well-known artists and discussing their messages, why the work is important and what makes it uniquely theirs. There are opportunities for reflection, making images in the landscape and refining photographic skills. Students work individually with the ParkeHarrisons to develop their personal photographic and conceptual messages. Stop-Motion Animation MEDIA & TECHNIQUES:  Stop-motion animation, including lighting and stage setup. Character study, sound synching and post-production using Adobe After Effects. ACTIVITIES:  Focus on giving things character and personality through timing and movement; framing and sound to create a group project. Daily films serve as examples for inspiration. FACULTY:  Royal College of Art graduate Sarah Cox runs “ArthurCox,” an award-winning production company.
