The Dramatic Portrait
Joel Grimes
SKILL LEVEL: II - III
CONCEPT: What could be more important to a
photographer than light? How we see, find,
create and control lighting determines an
image’s ultimate success. Lighting on location
provides opportunities and challenges for all
photographers. This workshop teaches students to use portable strobes in creative ways,
improve use and control of available light, and
combine available and supplemental light for
greater success. The emphasis is on environmental portraiture, yet the skills learned are
valuable for a wide range of photographic interests. This workshop is a must for those who
want to take the mystery out of using strobe
lighting, learn to become a creative force and
THINK LIKE AN ARTIST.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Digital SLR, single and
multiple speedlights/portable strobes, on-location sessions with created and natural light.
ACTIVITIES: Each day includes presentations,
demonstrations, shooting and critiques. We
build a foundation and add complexity as individuals gain confidence. Participants photograph interesting subjects in great locations.

CONCEPT: My first computer with the Commodore 64 was an amazing piece of technology,
but what I could do with my hands far outpaced
the inferior graphics of the C64. Today with the
aid of massive arrays of programming, libraries, frameworks and plain computing power,
the computer is capable of surpassing the
human hand like never before. How can we
use this new frontier in art making to generate
the impossible?
CONCEPT: By learning to paint expressively the
photographer can begin to make rich and varied backgrounds for digital images. Once background surfaces are made, we learn to apply
our digital images in different ways. By painting expressively we access the most immediate and direct links to
