CONCEPT: Through studio practice, critical analysis, dialogue and
individual consultation with the instructor, students will investigate making sculpture and its related genres (performance,
installation, conceptual, etc.) while simultaneously developing
their skills in looking at, thinking about and critiquing their own
and others’ work. Among the issues that will be discussed are:
relational aesthetics, in which the sculptural object is one element in social interactions; ecologically-conscious practices
that are beyond mere commentary and address the dichotomy of culture vs. nature; and how sculptural practices might
evolve through digital technology. This advanced workshop is
not assignment-based. Students will work in the medium of
their choice exploring associations latent in materials, forms
and context furthering their ongoing investigation.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Conventional sculpture materials such
as steel, wood, plaster, clay, as well as found objects, electronics, or time-based and installation mediums such as light
and sound. Students working in digital must bring their laptops and their own software.

SKILL LEVEL: Open to All – Any skill/knowledge level.
CORE
class
ACTIVITIES: This workshop will include studio time in the
sculpture facility, group critiques and discussions and oneon-one meetings with the instructor. On the first day I would
like workshop participants to bring images of past work for
sharing and discussion and a sketchbook every day.
CONCEPT: In this hybrid class, we’ll create constructions that
blur the lines between painting and sculpture. Using techniques associated with collage, assemblage, painting, and
sculpture, we’ll explore the use of color and material with
a focus on composition, space, and scale. We’ll push the
boundaries, working on the wall and creating freestanding
structures as we search out the hidden narratives within
objects and materials and examine their social implications.
