CONCEPT: Join data visualization artist Wesley
Grubbs in this workshop introducing the world of data
visualization and using statistics and data to make art.
The aim of the workshop is to be hands on and highly
approachable, including our environment and ourselves
as sources of the data we will use.
CONCEPT: The perfect opportunity to work on a project you
are passionate about, this workshop explores the process
of building a photographic project from initial conception,
to production, and final distribution through exhibitions,
books, multimedia and film. Phil shares his experience in
developing the initial and final concept as well as finding
partners to help finance and distribute the final product.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use digital photography,
image editing and printing with Adobe Lightroom/Adobe
Photoshop.
CONCEPT: Defining, sustaining and evolving an artistic
vision are challenges for artists across the board. This
workshop guides students in developing and defining
the personal voice through intense discussion, focused
reflection and honing photographic skills. We begin each
day by examining the work of well-known artists and
discussing their messages, why the work is important and
what makes it uniquely theirs. There are opportunities for
reflection, making images in the landscape and refining
photographic skills. Students work individually with
Shana and Robert to develop their personal photographic
and conceptual messages.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use a variety of
data collection tools that range from Arduino boards
with sensors, smartphone apps, our natural surroundings
and our own human actions. With data collected, we
use Processing and D3 to analyze, communicate and
visualize the data, mostly for creative purposes. Students
provide their own laptops. Arduinos are provided for the
workshop.
ACTIVITIES: We focus on the basics of understanding
statistics for art. We use natural resources around the
Ranch and find relationships and patterns that we use to
sort. From here, we move to easy-to-use data tracking
tools and then discuss the data and how to work with
it. We build an automated sensor with the Arduino and
spend the remaining time visualizing and playing with the
data to make art.
FACULTY: Wesley Grubbs is an artist, data visualizer
and provocateur. In 2007, he founded Pitch Interactive,
an Oakland, CA-based studio whose focus is weaving
code with design with statistics to find versatile solutions
to communicate complex. Wesley’s work focuses on
revealing patterns about human behavior and how our
actions impact our surroundings and has been showcased
in the MoMA, Foosner Art Museum, La Panacée and The
Max Planck Institute.

ACTIVITIES: We divide our time between lectures,
demonstrations, building a photographic documentary
project, and class critiques. Phil spends one-on-one
time with students to discuss the direction of their work.
Demonstrations include location lighting techniques,
how to approach and create rapport with subjects and
post-production enhancement of imagery in Adobe
Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. Participants select
the documentary project they would like to work with
from a list of local non-profits, local ranchers, rodeos,
equestrian centers, organic farms and local artists.
FACULTY: For over 25 years Phil Borges has been visiting
and documenting indigenous and tribal cultures around the
world. His award-winning books have been published in four
languages. Phil was honored with the Lucie Humanitarian
Award at the Annual International Photography Awards
in Los Angeles as well as the Purpose Prize. His latest
project “CRAZYWISE,” a feature-length documentary film,
questions how Western medicine labels and treats extreme
mental emotional states of consciousness.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use digital SLR
cameras, Adobe Lightroom and digital printmaking.
ACTIVITIES: We participate in daily one-on-one and
group discussions, critiques, image making, hikes, studio
time, and editing, developing and printing images.
FACULTY: Shana and Robert ParkeHarrison explore
the triangular relationship of humans, technology and
nature. They combine sculpture, painting, set design,
performance, photography and implied narrative to create
constructed, dreamlike images. Their works have been
featured in numerous shows, including the “Mediations
Biennale,” Poznan, Poland; “Fotografica Biennial,”
Bogota, Colombia; “lille 3000,” Lille, France, and “Wall at
WAM,” Worcester, MA. They are represented by Suzanne
Tarasieve Gallery in Paris and Jack Shainman Gallery, NY.
