Digital Portraiture:

SKILL LEVEL: II - III
CONCEPT: This workshop explores the relationship
between writing code and digital fabrication. The focus
is 2-D techniques using the laser cutter, CNC router, and
vinyl cutter to draw, etch, cut, and more. With Processing
software and access to the fabrication lab, each student
will explore individual ideas within this emerging way of
making and thinking. Tutorials and code samples will be
balanced with individual reviews and time to work in the
studio.
CONCEPT: This workshop focuses on building a series
of images around the city of Aspen Colorado and its
inhabitants. There is a strong emphasis on engaging
with and making photographic portraits of subjects and
locations that are unfamiliar. We cover the construction of
engaging portraits, the figure/ground relationship, the use
of creative perspectives and the decisive acuity required for
spontaneous portraiture. The workshop’s main objective is
to provide students with a technical and conceptual fluency
that they may apply within their own practice.
CONCEPT: This workshop is a must for anyone interested
in portraiture. Do your images truly express your artistic
vision? If not, let two of the nation’s most respected digital
photography pioneers work with you. This hands-on
workshop explores portraiture with on-location shooting
in addition to studio imaging and printing. Much of the
class is dedicated to one-on-one instruction, ensuring
that all individual questions and concerns are addressed.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students write code to
create images for high-resolution digital prints using the
processing environment and print on digital printers. No
programming experience is necessary, but participants
should be very comfortable using computers. Too much
programming experience is discouraged.
ACTIVITIES: We learn through short presentations
on technique/concept and studio work sessions. The
instructor tutors students individually during studio time.
New techniques are introduced in the first three days
with concentration on a final project during the last two
days.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Student use digital
photography, digital workflow and digital printmaking
with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop.
ACTIVITIES: We begin with a discussion of students’
portfolios, during which each student will receive
personalized feedback and exercises for improvement. We
study and discuss the precedent of successful portrait and
place photographers, deconstructing varied examples to
further their own work. Students are encouraged to break
through the boundaries between themselves and their
subjects as they work on their own project.
FACULTY: Casey Reas is an internationally recognized
artist and educator. He has exhibited his work
internationally at institutions including Laboral, in Gijon,
Spain, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York and the
National Museum for Art, Architecture and Design in
Oslo, Norway. Casey is the co-founder of Processing.
