Anatomy of the Human Heart May 2014 | Page 6

Historical Context

The chosen the period of time, is the Scientific Revolution. This period of time was when everyone started to question the things that surrounded them and asked themselves “How do things happen?” And so they thought “How does the human body work?” but this question led to “How does the human heart work?” For people to know how things happen, they must first observe it by testing it, and seeing if it was right or wrong. People’s ideas were based on some of the ideas of Aristotle, Plato and some other philosophers. But what if what they thought was incorrect? People at that time said, "We must test it, to see if it is correct or incorrect”. This led to a series of inventions and new discoveries. Technical problems such as more precise measurements and observing things with more detail, led to new inventions, then, these new inventions brought new ways of thinking, such as the telescope developed by Galileo Galilei; with this telescope he observed the planets and disproved some other Greek theories which were still thought to be true, but it also brought a lot of problems with religion. It will be a look at how was the human being seen at that time, and how did people discover what it is known about the heart right now, how the discoveries in medicine have affected the way humans live now, how was the heart seen back then, did people know what the heart does, did they discover something, and if they discovered something about the heart, how did they do it.

The heart is the organ that pumps blood to through the entire body, but what was society’s view of the heart at that time? Did they even know what the heart does?
