Antidepressants Disguised as Love
Natalie Majidzadeh
Emergencies; that’s what we are
playing sirens on loop,
our hearts in the clouds
we watched as you tied us to the ground
with tattered ropes
and rusty nails
only to shatter adolescent dreams
with a death-dealing voice
You knew you had us under your lock and key,
You knew we would be only what you wanted us to be.
So we let you
blindly lead us into surreptitious tendencies

So we let you spoonfeed us love
to keep us earthbound
but we did not register
the Quaaludes you mashed into your affections
so our muscles relaxed
as drugged smiles grew wider
you watched our guards drop
