An Ode: Shadow - A Seventeen Anthology | Page 7

“We’re going to pick you up now, where are you?” “Just go to the convenient store near my apartment. I’m almost there.” Wonwoo hung up his phone. He felt weird after that little shocking and confusing moment. He kept repeating in his head that it was just a little electrical problem and the soft whisper was just the sound of the wind, so he shouldn’t let it get to him. This boy right here wasn’t the coward of the story. Wonwoo was a full-time nerd, he loved reading books about mythical creatures and underworlds, but he didn’t believe that they’re real. Fictions are fictions after all. He arrived at the convenient store before Jihoon and Mingyu and decided to grab a can of beer to warm his body. “Happy Halloween! Beware of the spirits in disguise among the crowds!” What a lame Halloween greeting but Wonwoo still gave the cashier a light smile and a small bow. Just when he was about to open the can, the lanky boy heard a loud annoying honk and saw a blue Subaru Forester with the right window rolled down, approaching him. “Boo! Hop on, Skellington,” said Jihoon, who were dressed in a black hoodie and wore round glasses. “What are you? Juon with hoodie and glasses?” Wonwoo laughed at his own joke and hopped on to the car. “I tried to make him wear a black robe so he can be No Face but he bit me.” Mingyu drove off while showing the bite mark on his right hand and let out his puppy-like laugh. “You should go see a doctor, Gyu, he got rabies.” And for saying that, Wonwoo got five peanuts thrown at him like musket bullets. “Don’t forget he’s a baseball player, Hyung,” said Mingyu, chuckling. “Yeah, thanks for the late warning.” Wonwoo might seem unfriendly from the outside and was quiet most of the time, but his playful and mischievous side couldn’t be hidden when he was with his best friends. Just like usual, they talked about everything including the cute customer at the gelato shop Wonwoo worked at, who always got extra star sprinkles topping from him because he was amazed at how he could see a sea of stars in the customer’s eyes (except Jihoon and Mingyu still couldn’t believe how cheesy their friend could be). And a must agenda, singing Rex Orange County’s and The 1975’s out loud with all the windows down. They were not the kind of young adults who loved to mess around on the road, they just loved the fun night ride. The road had started to get crowded as a faint sound of blasting music started playing. It was their town’s annual agenda to celebrate the spookiest night of the year with a big party, where the citizens would dress up as everything they could find the costume of on eBay or Target, and glowing pumpkin patches scattered everywhere. The party was always held at the iconic and the most haunted building in town—according to them. It was the Museum of Myths and Spirits. An old yet well-maintained building that became the landmark of the town. A big “beware of the spirits in disguise among the crowds” banner hung at its huge luxurious gate.
