Music has
always been
a part of me;
it’s what I am
meant to do!”
Clinton: It’s definitely an honor.
Brian McKnight’s earlier work,
even from like the early 90’s, has
always been great. I mean, he’s
always been a great songwriter, a
great musician, his placement is
great—he’s someone who I grew
up listening to, so to be put in that
comparison is certainly beyond me;
I never would have guessed.
Lisa: Well, I certainly understand
the similarities because the one
thing that I can appreciate about
the both of you is that you write
and perform music that is universal.
When I listen to you, or Brian for
that matter, you’re not stuck in
any one genre. Neither of you are
exclusively R&B or exclusively pop,
etc., you simply create music.
Clinton: I credit my Mom for that
because when I was growing up, I
remember that my mother played
everything from Jazz, to Easy
Listening to Soul music like Otis
Redding and Bobby Womack,
to Sade and even Country. She
allowed us to listen to this wide
array of music, and what was so
fascinating about it is that at that
time, music was very pure—it felt
good, it sounded good, it had a
message; you felt what was going
on in the song. Li
